I Peter 1:23 since you have been born again — not of perishable seed but of imperishable — through the living and enduring word of God.
I read this verse today as I was studying for this weeks sermon. It struck me once more that our Savior did not save us because of how great we were or how good we were trying to be. He saved us because he loved us. What does that have to do with this verse? Glad you asked!
Jesus loves us and died for our sins. He is the "living and enduring word of God". If we had been saved through our works then we could have lost our salvation because our works are fickle. That is we can do good today and incredible evil tomorrow. But we are "born again - not of perishable seed but of imperishable". I understand this to mean that if I'm born of imperishable seed then I'm born into everlasting life!
This is what Jesus was talking about with Nicodemus in John 3:3 Jesus replied, “ I assure you:Unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Then the Son of God explained what He meant in verse 15 when He stated "So that everyone who believes in Him will have eternal life."
Finally He explained why in the most famous and well known verse in the Bible. It was because he LOVED US. John 3:16 “For God loved the world in this way:He gave His One and Only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.
